Double the Pleasure, Double the Fun...

....double the diapers, wipes, car seats, nightly awakenings....and about half the sleep. But it's totally worth it!!! Alex Carter joined our family on April 20th, and came into the world much more "quietly" than his sister. It was a surprisingly relaxing delivery, and Alex's personality is following that pattern.

With "two under two" we have a very busy household now. We spend a lot of time trying to rein-in/redirect Grace's enthusiasm for her baby brother. Any time Alex makes a peep she says "Paci" and quickly tries to put his pacifier in his mouth, by any means necessary! She really likes to hold his hand (with a death grip), but her favorite thing is giving him kisses which would usually result in her falling/sitting on him if Mom's hand weren't constantly on guard.

Last week we loaded up the truck and made the 600+ mile drive back to the ranch for the annual cattle sale. It was WONDERFUL to be back and we all survived the traveling (we'll leave it at that). The entire Effertz clan was back for the sale, and it was wonderful to see everyone. Alex met his Effertz family, and I think he was impressed. He was especially taken by his aunties. He spent hours staring into Abbey, Amanda, and Sarah's eyes!

Of course Grace and Anna had a great time playing together, too! Grandpa Neil built a sand-pile and tire swing for the girls and they spent hours playing there. As a result, a very brave Grandma Jan gave the girls a bath (more splashing than I've ever seen). Thank you Grandpa and Grandma!

Cousins

Growing up I had so much fun with my cousins. To this day I treasure those memories we made...writing letters to Emily (I'm pretty sure Emily was my primary source for everything pop-culture and taught me boys are not "cute" they are "so fine"), spending a week in Colorado and Minnesota every summer, the famous Grandkids Week at Grandpa Don's (Grandpa, thank you for being crazy enough to host that event. It is truly one of my greatest childhood memories.), baseball in the park at the 4th of July, and of course babysitting all of my younger Effertz cousins.

I'm so happy Grace has cousins her age on both sides to share those joys and make those memories! It is amazing how they connect already.

We had the pleasure of a visit from Sarah, Abbey and Anna a couple weeks ago, and the highlight was definitely watching our girls play together. It was wonderful! They played so well and would sporadically just hug each other. When they were leaving Anna turned back to wave goodbye to Grace and said, "I love you." (Yes, I'm crying again.) They are just so sweet!

Grace also has the fortune of having Logan so close by. He calls her "my baby" and is so good about sharing his toys with her (a big step for an almost 3 year old boy). They have fun playing together at Grandma and Grandpa's!

Grace's cousin Adam (Lucas' cousin Katie's son) is also just 6 months older than Grace. A few weeks ago we had dinner together and those two had a blast! Adam taught Grace all about tractors and Grace told Adam all about shoes. By the end of the evening they were sneaking away to play hide-n-seek in the hallway. They're quite a pair!

This one's for Anna...

Yes, it's been FOREVER since we've posted anything here. I believe most of our loyal followers are aware of our most significant news, so rather than recap the past 6-7 months, we'll start fresh.

I understand our darling niece/cousin Anna is probably Gracie's Dugout's #1 Fan. Apparently she spends a lot of her free time reviewing Grace's pictures and calling Grandma Jan to give her play-by-play updates. (ex: "Grandma, I see Grace. Her ride Libby. This is Libby's nose. This is Libby's ear. This is Libby's tail...." all over the phone.) I love it!

We recently purchased a flip video camera so we can capture life as the kids grow. So, Anna, these are for you...

Around the World in 10 Days

...or so it seemed. We always knew Grace was a good traveler, but this last expedition put her to the test. From Boone to North Platte, NE to Golden/Evergreen, CO, back to Boone for one night then off to Washington, DC for a week. While it was a whirlwind of a trip it was FANTASTIC!

I would say the highlights were seeing all of the family in CO and Grace getting to spend the week with Grandma Jan in DC. And a VERY special treat for me...whitewater rafting with my brothers and their gals. Thanks guys!!!

On the water. We took a water taxi from our hotel to the historic city of Alexandria where we found some cute shops and a fantastic ice cream parlor!

Part of Lucas' recognition for work included a rooftop dinner a couple blocks from the Capitol. We had almost a 360 degree view of DC and it was breathtaking!

Celebrating Our Independence

As we give thanks and celebrate our freedom today Miss Grace tries to create a little freedom of her own. Her walker allows her to explore the kitchen without much restraint (as I write this she is stretching out of her walker as far as she can reach and opening kitchen cabinets.) However, I can see her drooling with anticipation for her exploratory freedom to extend to the rest of the house.

Yesterday she attempted crawling but resigned to "squirming" across the floor when she couldn't make her arms and legs work in unison. She doesn't sit up on her own yet, but I think it's because she's sooooo wiggly.

From eating sweet potatoes (an entire container last night) to chasing Libby around the kitchen in her walker to splashing in the pool, I just can't believe how quickly she's growing up.

Four Months and Growing

Well Grace is more than twice as old as she was last time I posted here...(ugh that's not good.) She's been a busy girl growing and learning new "tricks" every day.

She had her four month check up this week and Dr. Halbur says she's a perfectly healthy little girl. She's average for weight and in the 75 percentile for height....it's those long & strong legs. She loves her exersaucer, and if she's being held she's usually standing or jumping on your lap.

Grace and I made a spontaneous trip back up to ND a week ago and had a fabulous time! Other than the REALLY messy diaper at about 30,000 feet she was a cooperative flier again.

While in ND Grandpa Neil drove us up to see Great Grandpa Pat and Great Grandma Loretta. We had lunch at a fabulous remodeled restaurant in Velva. They had an old soda fountain and the back of the store is a quilting shop. It was so nice to Grandma and Grandpa and listen stories about them growing up around there.

From there we headed to Sarah, Kris and Anna's where the girls got to play together. As Aunt Abbey described, Anna and Grace are "besties" (best friends).

Below are some links of the girls playing and Anna in the tub. Anna taught Grace how much fun bath time can be. Grace used to just relax in the bath and treat it more like a spa, but since witnessing Anna's excitement for bath-time Grace now splashes and kicks in the tub, too.

With nicer weather in ND (FINALLY!!!) Grace and I played outside, looked at the cattle and the horses and giggled at the dogs...who knew dogs could be so fun?!?!

Grandma Jan babysat while I ran errands. She and Grace got to go to the capital and meet all of the ladies (Grandma's coworkers). Grace apparently soaked up the attention!

Grace continues to be a Cubs fan, although we watched some Twins games at the ranch and loved those, too. We're waiting for a bit warmer weather before we head down to Des Moines for Grace's first Iowa Cubs game. Daddy says she can hardly wait! I think Daddy can hardly wait.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch

Grace and Mommy spent a spectacular week back home on the ranch! Grace experienced a lot of firsts....flying, meeting lots of family, attending a bull sale, watching a basketball game...the list goes on.

Grandpa Neil and Grandma Jan stayed up way past their bedtime to meet us at the airport after midnight. Grandma even risked being arrested for leaving her vehicle unattended to rush in and kiss Gracie. Onlookers noticed grandma's pride admiring, "Oh, that must be the Grandma."

Back at the house that night we tried to be quiet, but Anna woke-up anyway. It took her a while to realize she was sitting next to another baby. When it hit her, the sleep disappeared from her eyes and she squealed with delight. Anna and Grace were instant friends!

Grace was a hit among Grandma and Grandpa's friends at the Century High girls basketball game. We got to watch Madi lead her team to another win!

On Saturday, we went to the Effertz Key Ranch Bull Sale where we met a lot of the Effertz family including Great-Grandpa Pat! After the bull sale was complete, Gracie got to snuggle with her Grandpa Neil! She was definitely content with him.

We had such a great time at the ranch! We can't wait to go back for the sale in June when Gracie gets to meet her Auntie Abbey. We're so excited...it can't come soon enough.
